Minny's Chocolate Pie...Yum!

OK, so I have CHOCOLATE on the brain!
I thought I'd repost this recipe of
Minny's Chocolate Pie, in case you missed it....enjoy!
The Oscar nominations are out, and to celebrate the many nods that the movie "The Help" received, I'm making my version of MINNY'S CHOCOLATE PIE!  I don't know about you, but I'm hoping for Best Picture!

My best guess on Minny's pie, is that it's a chocolate chess pie.  When Hilly cuts herself a piece, the top has a crisp layer, while the inside is gooey with deep chocolate goodness.  The recipe I'm using is from Food.com and here is the link:  Chocolate Chess Pie. Minny topped her pie with whipped cream (and no...not Cool Whip!).  I'll include instructions for that later.  It's also good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream...yeah!

Does anyone care that I don't make my own pie crust?  Good! because I don't!  Pillsbury does a great job.  I also like Marie Calender's frozen pie crusts in the freezer dept. (very flaky and like homemade, except for the machine stamped edges)  So first, I pull out my Pillsbury pie crust and let it set out for 15 minutes.  Unroll and lay in pie pan, then crimp edges...the fun part!

CHOCOLATE CHESS PIE

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • tablespoons cocoa powder
  • tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • large eggs
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • teaspoon vanilla
  •  9-inch unbaked pie crust

Directions:

  1. 1
    Preheat oven to 325F degrees.
  2. 2
Combine sugar, cocoa, flour, and salt.
  3. 3
    Blend in milk.
  4. 4
Beat in eggs 1 at a time.
  5. 5
Add butter and vanilla, beat until smooth.
  6. 6
    Pour into prebaked pie shell.
  7. 7
Bake in 325* oven for 55-60 minutes.

I did not prebake the pie shell, as the original recipe said and it turned out fine.  I also put foil coverings around pie crust edges after 20 minutes, so as not to burn. Easy cheesey!

To make whipped cream, pour a pint into your mixing bowl and beat with beaters, until soft peaks form.  To test, turn off mixer and lift beaters straight up out of bowl.  If cream makes a peak and the top folds over, then you've got soft peaks.  If they stand up straight, then you have stiff peaks.  Add 1-2 tablespoons of powdered sugar at this point, and continue beating until you have stiff peaks.

Enjoy your pie!  It's good Food!   And for your listening pleasure....I do love this song!

  6. First of all...I LOVE the new look! Second of all, I had never heard of chocolate pie until I read The Help, which is one of my all-time faves. I do not care that you do not make your own piecrust; I buy mine, too. My mother considers it a mortal sin and I have to say five Hail Marys and an Our Father. And I'm not even Catholic.
