Kitchen Hood {Makeover} with ASCP

This is my first real project using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  I took a class back in March, and have been biting at the bit to get started...the problem was, which project to do first?!
In class we learned 4 painting techniques, and one was a Texture technique, which is basically globbing the paint on, and leaving open spots wherever you like.  It actually reminded me of a fresco, or venetian type finish.  I immediately thought about my hood.
As you can see in this BEFORE picture, the hood is a lovely shade of pea green!  I've lived with this icky shade of green for 6 years, only because I paid someone to faux finish it....but no more!
Here is the new color!!!  I envisioned the color to match the tile border above the cooking surface, which is a travertine rope.  There also are some slate tiles in the backsplash that are this multi-hued beige.
The surface of the hood was already textured a little, so the paint just accentuated that.  I used Old Ochre and left some places of old paint showing through.  (Yes, I did paint over the pea green with the wall color, which is Nantucket Grey...didn't want any peas showing through!)
one thick coat of Old Ochre with NO wax
Here's what it looked like with one gloppy coat of Old Ochre.  You can kinda see the specks of grey-green showing through here and there.
Old ochre with clear and dark wax
Then came the wax!  First clear...then the dark wax.  I don't own a wax brush, so I used old rags.  Talk about "elbow grease"!  I definitely got a workout today from going up and down on a tall ladder, to rubbing and buffing.  I'm not as young as I used to be...whew!
But yea!!  It's done and I LOVE the color.   Now, do I put the trays back,
 or
do I stencil a beautiful design on the front and leave the trays off...????
Here's a view where you can see the matte sheen of the buffed wax...lovely!!

  2. Hi Janis, thanks for following! Your hood looks fantastic, love it! I have been dieing to try the chaulk paint for a few months now, but haven't taken a class, and frankly not sure on a project. A freind recently painted all her kitchen cabinets, and loves them!! Thanks for sharing your project, I will be watching for a follow up on what you do next. I love your stencil inspiration photo. If it was me I would want to change it out,( trays, wreaths, pictures, etc.) just because I get bored, but the stencil would look great I'm certain.

  4. I vote for the trays, but maybe in a different configuration. I like adding dimension to balance the textures in the room.

  7. I'm hopping around all the blogs who visited me during the 5 Minutes for Mom blog party. Thanks for stopping by!

I love the lighter color you used. It makes the area look bigger, especially without the big black dish. Personally, I always like stencils.

  9. Your hood looks beautiful! I was so impressed with that texture technique at the ASCP workshop. I vote for nothing at all in front of it. The hood makes a statement of it's own in my opinion. But considering that wasn't one of your options, I vote for the trays. :)

  12. What a beautiful job you did. It looks fantastic! I have some friends that have that hood and had it stenciled. It would look very French Country. It looks wonderful whatever you decide to do. Thanks for sharing on Simple & Sweet Fridays.

  17. First off, I cannot be-LIEVE that I have only just now found this amazing blog. Secondly, I'm not a huge fan of stenciling, but after seeing your inspiration pic and the fact that you are obviously very talented, I say definitely stencil. It will add to the Tuscan feel of the room and give it a custom look.

    1. My inspiration stencil on the pic was a custom stencil, so I have not found one that I like that would fit the size. Guess I need to try looking again, because there may be some new ones out now!
