Tips for {Saving Money} on Decor

Christmas is over, our pocketbooks are thinner,
and it's freezing cold outside. Well, I have some good news!

I am partnering with 9 other bloggers to share with you
some money saving tips for the New Year and a chance to win a $250 gift card from Amazon.com. How great is that?

Here are a few tips that I have implemented over the years.

1.  Mix things around.
Go into other rooms and look for decor items that could work somewhere else in your house.

I keep a stash of items that I am not currently using, on shelves in the garage, so I will go rummage around and bring something back into the house that maybe we haven't seen in awhile.

It's fun to find a new home for picture,
lamp, or other decorative piece.
 2. Shop Discount Stores for Home Decor items.
My favorite places are Hobby Lobby, HomeGoods, Marshall's,
and Decor Steals online (and probably in that order).

Hobby Lobby has something on sale every week,
so download their app onto your smart phone.
When you are at the checkout, at your fingertips will be a 40% off coupon off any one item that is not on sale.
Can't beat it folks!

Hobby Lobby Big Tip of the Day: walk every aisle!
The Garden aisle is where I found these gorgeous cement pedestals. The large size was $17, and the smaller ones were $11
with an additional 30% off the week I was there.
Second big tip, look up. If you don't see what you're looking for on the shelves, HL stacks all the extra merchandise
on the tip top of their shelves.
I've seen lamps on the top shelf in the Tshirt or jewelry section!

These stores also keep up with the trends. This burlap basket/tray that holds my magazines was a find at HL and on sale.

The cute little bird came from the Garden aisle also
and on sale for nearly nothing!
This pedestal is going to be used so many ways. Here are a few:
It would be a great base for a cloche.
A white pumpkin would look lovely on top.
It could hold a plant, vase, urn, etc.
Go get you one! (and no, I am not affiliated with Hobby Lobby, but I wish I was! Someone tell me when they offer an affiliate program and I'll be ALL over that!)

3. Re-use what you have.
Would you believe the couch in our Living Room is the very first couch hubs and I ever bought? That makes that beauty a whopping 20+ years old. I had it reupholstered 8+ years ago
along with the 2 club chairs (which are also 10+ years old).

Re-use by painting a piece of furniture to give it new life.
This red table was hidden behind the couch, but when we flipped the furniture arrangement, it wasn't working.
You can read more about this transformation here.
It looks brand new! And it really was a cheap table with nothing interesting going on, except for some distressing and rustic holes.
This armoire, which we bought from friends who couldn't use it,  was given new life when I painted it. The full tutorial is here.
The painted armoire is probably my favorite piece!

I'll be sharing my Master Bedroom later this week, so check back to see more pictures of the armoire.

4. Shop Thrift Stores and Antique Fairs
You never know what you'll find at a Thrift store,
but that is part of the fun. I'm always looking for old books.

I've also found interesting architectural pieces that I use
for wall art. Old frames are so fun to play with and
you can never have too many!

5. Make Your Own Decor
In the age of Pinterest, you can find all sorts of DIY Home decor and crafts. I use the search feature on Pinterest to find certain projects or gather ideas.

If you have a computer and a printer,
you can make your own typography decor. My entry table has a framed book page with the words "be still" printed on it.
The frame was 50% off at, you guessed it HL.
If you are a crafter, a glue gun and moss are priceless.
I think handmade decor items make a house unique
as well as more personal.
My Christmas Home Tour shows you
several more handmade items.

Those are my tips for saving money and I hope they are helpful.

  7. Hobby Lobby is my best friend, But I don't buy that much since I have so much already. I shop the basement and garage often. I've never owned a new couch in my life. Someday I will get one, but it will last me until I die. Your home is lovely and if I do make it to HL anytime soon I think I will look for some of those pedestals. You're right, they would look awesome with a cloche!
